「とばかり(に)」【N1】

用法

≪接続≫
　普通形/丁寧形＋とばかり(に)┃以下接続例
　   V：する＋とばかり(に)
　   A：おいしい＋とばかり(に)
　 Na：にぎやか(だ)＋とばかり(に)
　   N：本(だ)＋とばかり(に)

≪意味・使い方≫
　XとばかりにY。

1. いかにもXという様子でYする　＜Doing Y with an implied suggestion of X＞
2. 言葉ではなく、態度や様子からXが感じられる、と言ったときに使う
3. Yには、激しい動作が来ることが多い
4. 「ここぞとばかりに」という慣用表現があり、「ここが一番大事だ」「ここしかチャンスがない」といった意味で使われる

例文

登山の途中、彼は休もうとばかりにその場に座った。 (During the mountain climb, he sat on the spot as if he was about to take a break.)

アパートの大家さんは、これを読めとばかりに掲示板の貼り紙を指さした。 (The landlord of the apartment pointed at the notice on the bulletin board as if urging, “Read this.”)

警察はお前が犯人だろうとばかりに私をにらみつけた。 (The police stared at me as if thinking, “You must be the culprit.”)

敵チームは今がチャンスだとばかりにボールを奪った。 (The opposing team seized the opportunity as if thinking, “Now is our chance,” and stole the ball.)

大好きなお菓子を見かけて今がチャンスとばかりに大量買いした。 (Upon seeing their favorite sweets, I seized the moment as if thinking, “Now is the chance,” and bought a large quantity.)

うちのネコは、近づくと「なでてくれるのか」とばかりに顎を差し出してくる。 (Our cat extends its chin as if wondering, “Will you pet me?” when someone approaches.)

夫の好きなスイーツをもらったが、ひとつしかなかったため、証拠隠滅とばかりに食べた。 (Upon receiving my husband’s favorite dessert, but there was only one, I ate it as if trying to eliminate the evidence.)

母は年末のセールでここぞとばかりに服を買い漁った。 (My mother went on a shopping spree during the year-end sale as if thinking, “Now is the time.”)

大好きなアイドルのソロ曲ではここぞとばかりにペンライトを振り回す。 (During my favorite idol’s solo song, I swing their penlight as if thinking, “This is the moment.”)

用法

≪接続≫
　Vナイ形＋んばかりに┃以下接続例
　   V：言わない＋んばかりに(※する→せんばかりに)
　   A：なし
　 Na：なし
　   N：なし

≪意味・使い方≫
　XんばかりにY。

1. ほとんどXしそうな様子でYする　＜Doing Y in a manner suggesting doing X＞
2. 実際にはXしていないが、Xしそうな様子だ、と言いたいときに使い、比喩的に使うこともできる
3. 「～んばかりの」で名詞に接続できるほか、「～んばかりだ。」と文を終わらせることもできる。

例文

戦争の映像を見るのは胸が張り裂けんばかりに辛かった。 (With a sense that their chest would burst, it was difficult to watch the war footage.)

まるで整形を悪だと言わんばかりに叩く人がいるが、コンプレックス解消するのはいいことではないだろうか。 (Some people seem to bash cosmetic surgery as if it were inherently wrong, but isn’t resolving one’s insecurities a good thing?)

お腹がはち切れんばかりにいっぱいになりました。 (I’m so full that I feel like my stomach is about to burst.)

畳んだ服がクローゼットの上に、崩れんばかりに山積みになっている。 (The folded clothes are piled up on top of the closet, almost collapsing.)

ケーキにふんわり生クリームと、春摘み苺があふれんばかりに載っています。 (The cake is overflowing with fluffy whipped cream and freshly picked strawberries.)

彼の目は怒りに満ち、まるで雷を落とさんばかりに相手を睨みつけた。 (His eyes were filled with anger as if ready to unleash lightning bolts, glaring at the other person.)

彼は冷たい視線を送りながら、まるで「黙っていれば分かるだろう」と言わんばかりの態度を取った。 (While giving a cold stare, he adopted an attitude as if to say, “If I stay silent, you’ll understand.”)

彼の眼差しは真剣そのもので、まるで「言葉は必要ない、私は行動する」と言わんばかりの意志が感じられた。 (His gaze was incredibly serious, as if saying, “Words are unnecessary; I will act.”)

彼はまるで私のせいで失敗したと言わんばかりのあきれた表情をしていた。 (He wore a bewildered expression as if to say, “It’s all your fault that we failed.”)

彼女は溢れんばかりの笑顔でこちらに手を振った。 (She waved her hand with an overflowing smile towards me.)

彼の目には闘志がみなぎり、「勝つぞ！」と言わんばかりだ。 (In his eyes, there was a surge of fighting spirit, as if declaring, “I will win!”)
