用法

　※動詞以外にも、「どこから」「いつから」「どこへ」などの疑問詞が使われることもある

≪意味・使い方≫
　Xともなく/ともなしにY

意図せずにXする　＜do X unconsciously＞
「なんとなくXしていたら、～～～が起こった」と言いたいときに使う
動詞の場合、XとYには同じ動作のものが入る
疑問詞の場合は、「どこから/いつから/どこへかはわからないが、～～～」という意味になる
「ともなく」と「ともなしに」はどちらでもいいが、疑問詞の場合は「ともなく」がよく使われる

例文

公園を散歩中、聞くともなしに鳥のさえずりを聞いていた。 (While walking in the park, I unconsciously listened to the chirping of birds.)

飛行機から見るともなしに白い雲を見ていた。 (I looked at the white clouds from the airplane without really thinking.)

けさ家事をしながらニュースを聞くともなしに聞いていたら、知り合いの名前が出てきて驚いた。 (While doing household chores this morning and unconsciously listening to the news, I was surprised when I heard the name of an acquaintance mentioned.)

見るともなしに見ていたワイドショーで、意外な情報を入手できた。 (I obtained unexpected information from a wide show I was watching without really paying attention.)

見るともなく景色をただ眺めていた。 (I was just gazing at the scenery without really looking at it.)

片付けするともなくしていたら昔の写真が出てきた。 (I found some old photos while I was tidying up without really trying.)

駅前で待っていたら、どこからともなく友達の声が聞こえた。 (I was waiting at the station, and then I heard my friend’s voice from nowhere.)

カフェで本を読んでいたら、どこからともなく素敵な音楽が聞こえてきた。 (While reading a book at the café, I heard lovely music coming from nowhere.)

海辺を散歩していたら、どこからともなく波の音が聞こえてきた。 (While taking a walk by the seaside, I heard the sound of waves coming from nowhere.)
