用法

≪意味・使い方≫
　XようにもXない。

Xしたくてもできない　＜can’t even X even if I want to X＞
「事情があって、Xしようと思ってもできない」と言いたいときに使う
Xは意志動詞のみ
2回目のXは可能動詞になるため、「する」は「しようにもできない」となる

Teaching Points
１．「にも」の直後が必ず可能動詞のない形になるわけではなく、以下のような文を作ることも可能。文末は可能動詞のない形となっているが、直後ではない。「にも」と文末の間で理由を述べる使い方がある。
　例：ヒント出そうにも出したら多分わかるから何も言えない
２．後件に可能動詞のない形がまったくない形も実際の会話では散見される。

　例：何か作ろうにもインスピレーションが湧かない
このような文が実際の生活では多く見られるが、これは、後件の一部が省略されている使い方をしていると推察できる。
　例：何か作ろうにもインスピレーションが湧かない(ので作れない)
３．問題集や参考書では便宜的に「～よう」と書いてあるが、これは意向形を指している

例文

台風で全線運転を停止しているので帰ろうにも帰れない。 (Due to the typhoon causing a complete suspension of train services, I can’t even return home even if I wanted to.)

外の工事があまりにもうるさくて、寝ようにも寝られない。 (The noise from the construction outside is so loud that I can’t even sleep even if I try to.)

どんなに親と仲が悪くても、親との関係は断とうにも断てないものだ。 (No matter how bad the relationship is with one’s parents, severing ties with them is something one can’t easily do.)

お金がないので、引っ越そうにも引っ越せない。 (Because I don’t have enough money, I can’t even move out even if I wanted to.)

夫は嫌いだが、子どもがいるから離婚しようにもできない。 (I dislike my husband, but because we have children, I can’t even divorce him even if I wanted to.)

新しい仕事が見つからないから辞めようにも辞められない。 (Because I can’t find a new job, I can’t even quit my current job even if I wanted to.)

友達に頼まれて、断ろうにも断れなかった。 (Even though I wanted to decline because a friend asked, I couldn’t bring myself to refuse.)

A:なんで昨日来なかったの？ (A: “Why didn’t you come yesterday?”)
B:合否の手紙が来ることになってたから、出かけようにも出かけられなかったんだよ。 (B: “Because I was expecting an acceptance letter, I couldn’t even go out.”)

祖母からの手紙はいつも達筆過ぎて読もうにも読めない。 (The letters from my grandmother are always too well-written to read even if I wanted to.)

海外旅行中、言葉がわからないから、道を聞こうにも聞けなかった。 (While traveling abroad, because I couldn’t understand the language, I couldn’t even ask for directions even if I wanted to.)

昨日からの落石事故で道が寸断されていて、通ろうにも通れず、足止めをくらっている。 (Due to the rockslide accident since yesterday, the road is completely blocked, I’m stuck here unable to pass through.)
